What is the difference between zirconia corundum and regular corundum?
Zirconia corundum is significantly harder and more durable than standard corundum. During grinding, zirconia crystals fracture in such a way that new sharp edges are constantly exposed—hence its long service life. Corundum aluminum oxide is more affordable and has a proven track record, but it is less durable. For large projects, zirconia usually pays for itself because you use fewer belts.
When is zirconia the best choice—and when is corundum or ceramic a better option?
Zircon is the ideal choice for standard parquet flooring projects that demand high durability and sanding quality. For more budget-friendly general-purpose applications, our corundum sanding belt is often sufficient. For extreme conditions—such as very hard woods or large industrial surfaces—our premium ceramic sanding belt is the most cost-effective solution, offering the longest service life.
How long does a sanding belt last in professional use?
This depends heavily on the type of wood, the grit size, and the pressure applied by the machine. As a general rule of thumb for zirconia corundum on oak parquet: 30–50 m² per belt for coarse sanding (K40), and correspondingly more for fine sanding. On softer wood or with finer grits, a belt can last significantly longer.
What grit size should I use for the first round of sanding on old hardwood floors?
For heavily worn or varnished hardwood floors, start with K24 or K36 for coarse sanding. For floors with normal wear, K40 or K60 is usually sufficient. Then gradually increase the grit size: K60 → K80 → K100 for fine sanding.
